Why Did My Used Car Only Come With One Key?

key replacement

I was only given one key with my car

This is a fairly common occurrence when you buy a used car. There are a couple of contributing factors. Generally, a used vehicle is driven to the dealership to trade in with the key on the persons keychain.

Id be willing to guess that the only thing on their mind is trading in the car and getting something newer. They aren’t thinking about grabbing any extra keys before leaving and driving down to the dealership.

Sometimes, a car is actually traded in with 2 keys. Of these times, it may be a lease trade in. The person will get charged for a missing or lost key. So 2 keys then are given with the trade.

This situation doesn’t always lead to the buyer getting the 2 keys. Sometimes the dealer has good key control, and will maintain them well and pass them along to you when you buy the car. Sometime though, a key is misplaced, and therefore you end up just one.
