How to get a car key made without original

Most people don’t think much about the everyday items we all take for granted. Amongst these things would be your cell phone, wallet, house keys, etc. On this list for sure is your car keys. They play a huge role in our lives, and depending on how you look at it, may even top the list of important daily items.  Car keys are used to get to work, get home, pick up your kids from school, pick up groceries, etc.

It’s hard to estimate how many folks only have one key for their vehicle, but it sure can cause some stress when it comes up missing.  As a locksmith, I’ve heard many stories on how the keys were lost.  The good news is, there are some solutions that can usually get you back on the road that same day, and sometimes even within a few hours.  Being a locksmith who provides this service, I can confidentially tell you there are two options.  These two options will generally be automotive locksmiths and auto dealers.

  • Locksmiths that specialize in automotive work can generally do many forms of key and remote work for your vehicle.  This work would range from spare keys to situations where all the keys are lost.  The added benefit of hiring a locksmith is that they can come to your location more often than not.  There is no need for a tow.  This can be done at your home, work, or somewhere in between. Considering the tow, the dealer will always require you to have the vehicle towed.  Some folks may have it included on their insurance, while some may not.  This is something to consider when shopping around for pricing.
  • Locksmiths can generally work these types of jobs in same day or the next day. As a locksmith, I realize how important my vehicle is, and I know how important yours is too. Dealers will generally need you to create an appointment another day. Getting you back on the road is important.  You need your vehicle for work, to pick up the kids, or running errands.
  • Locksmith do have the ability to cut and program most keys.  Some dealers will tell you otherwise.  As a locksmith that deals with automotive keys, I carry key cutting equipment, programming equipment, diagnostic equipment, and many small specialized tools that aid in the creation of keys.  These tools assist us in determining the cuts of the keys when no key is present to copy from.  All cars are different. There is no master key for vehicles.  On top of the equipment is the stock items of keys, remotes, push button start fobs, etc.  If you are ever wondering why automotive keys cost what they do, remember to consider the amount of tools, equipment, fuel, and insurance locksmiths have.
  • Most locksmiths will perform diagnostics on your vehicle along with key cutting and programming.  Sometimes vehicles have an electronic issue that is hindering the programming process.  The diagnostic equipment can generally assist in narrowing that down. Dealers will charge for everything it does by the hour.  A competent locksmith knows exactly what it will take to creat the key for you and quote you appropriately up front.
  • Most locksmiths will spend a few minutes with you to cover the remotes  capabilities if you are unfamiliar.  We generally test all buttons and features before relinquishing the key or remote to you.  We prefer you feel confident with the work performed and have you test out these options while still onsite. This is a great time for questions.  If you have ever felt rushed at the dealer, this is where the locksmith has the advantage to accommodate those needs.
