Most locksmiths do perform many functions. Most would think they just unlock lock in the case of someone being locked out of their car. But we locksmiths do quite a bit more. More often than not, the “smith” part of the job title isn’t considered.
Some locksmiths excel in one area of the trade. Others try to cover every aspect. Not all locksmiths are created equal. For the most part, locksmiths generally work on residential locks, rekeying of those locks, and key making.
Other may work on commercial locks and all the applications of those locks. And others concentrate on the automotive locks, keys, and remotes. Some work on safes and the opening of them, repairs, and lock changes.
There are a few locksmiths that stick to the “one stop shop” rule and cover every aspect of locksmithing. You would be surprised the amount of tools required to do this. This would be the main reason some locksmiths don’t cover all the aspects of locksmithing.
It comes down to training and the acquisition/updating/maintenance of the tools to perform the duties of the job. They are expensive. No doubt about it. They cannot be purchased at a hardware store.
Most of the tools are regulated and cannot be purchased without a legitimate locksmith business license. We don’t want these tools in the hands of criminals if it can be avoided. So please consider this when hiring a locksmith.
The common duty of locksmiths as mentioned above is the residential locksmith. This aspect of locksmiths covers anything to do with your home or anything on your property that relates to the home. The most common of these would the rekeying of locks.
This is basically servicing the lock in a way to change the key that operates the lock. New home owners like to rekey the locks when a home is purchased. A lock can be rekeyed if a key is lost. Sometimes someone is kicked out or evicted from the home, which is a good time to rekey the locks as well.
Furthermore, keys can be made from the lock in its current state too. If the lock or locks at your home are serviceable, it’s generally going to cheaper to rekey them versus replacing them. The second most common residential call is for lock repairs. A lot of time they just don’t function as they should.
Sometimes these are easy fixes, other times they can be more involved. These fixes can sometimes even need a complete lock replacement. Most locksmiths will have parts on hand to repair most lock failure situations.
And third most common, residential locksmiths can also be tasked to install locks. This would include something a customer has purchased or what the locksmith themselves provides. Locksmiths can install these locks in the existing hole do the door or even cut new holes if needed with specialized tools.
